Note, I really do enjoy some of the feedback I get in this blog. I’ve heard some great stories and received some great tips and tricks that have helped my own playing and enjoyment of the game.

But, unfortunately, my blog also attracts folks of all ages who see me as competition to be battered down into the ground (”I’m better than you, see?” comments), or some kind of financial supplier with a never-ending source of free stuff.

On the one hand, the relentless begging and bashing are strange concepts to me, considering I’m a complete and utter stranger, but on the other hand they’re not strange concepts to me because I notice clearly in life how many humans mistakenly think the world revolves around them and that everyone around them is ultimately present to either serve them or stand in their way.

I used to just delete the comments, but I think I’ll start to post about them instead, because it sounds more fun, and lets me link to other articles in my blog that new readers might not have otherwise come across.

I’ll be nice, because that’s what I am - but I also need practice being blunt, so I will likely do that too.

So, we’ll start with the first one I looked at out of the 909 comments I need to sift through since I haven’t been moderating comments for the past 9 months or so:

QUESTION/COMMENT
Date: November 18, 2006

dude how did u get ur stats so high?! I wuz wonderin if u could give me some money like 500k or sometin.

my user is [no longer included here]

add me and try and give memoney!!!!

ANSWER:

I got my stats high by playing hour upon hour upon hour, wasting time I could have spent socializing with humans face-to-face, working out, cooking healthy meals, or even learning new things and expanding my various Real Life potentials. I also got my stats high by sticking with the same character and rarely playing alternate ones. For example, I have no “pure” PK-based characters at this time.

To optimize my advancement, I tended to log in early in the morning when the population counts were the lowest and work on my high-competition skills like mining during those times.

Becoming a member was a key in my advancement. The world is much much bigger and therefore things you’re trying to gather in any one spot tend to have less competition than in non-member worlds.

As for cash - no, I won’t give you any. You’re a complete stranger, take responsibility, learn how to earn it on your own and stop relying on the world to support you.

There’s lots of great tips in this blog in general, but check out the specific entries about earning money by selling logs, running runes, mining ores, and if you’re a member, running flax.

If you need a job, check out the Runescape Job board and list your profile for free today.

[sarcasm]
Besides, you’ll get more online girlfriends if you have the bling to support their needs.
[/sarcasm]

The End For This Round

Well, that’s enough for now. I’m sure there’ll be a lot more fodder for these types of entries, considering the 800 additional comments I haven’t viewed yet.

There are a number of other comments that were left that had questions of substance (ie: great questions, useful tips!), and I’ll be answering those, too, as time allows. If you’ve got a question or some helpful tips for others reading the blog, feel free to leave a comment. I’ll dedicate a full entry to any true, thoughtful, intelligent question.

But note, if you post a self-centered, whiny, begging or outright idiotic comment, you may appear on the next list where I practice calling those types of people out on their behavior.

I know, some people like that. Maybe I won’t give _those people_ attention, because I like to annoy attention-mongers… it’s in my blood.

Early on as a Runescape Mage or Ranger, you can fight much like you’d fight with a melee character, in being toe-to-toe with your opponent as you fire your spells or arrows into them. Low level NPC opponents don’t hit very hard so this strategy works just fine initially.

But, very soon you’re going to want to upgrade your strategy for fighting as a Mage or Ranger in the online role playing game, Runescape - soon, your opponents will start to beat you rather hard, because you don’t have the armor that a melee fighter does.

So, what are the Runescape tips to avoid being beaten upon by our opponents as we get higher level?

Hide behind stuff, just like my secondary character (a little mismatched in dress) is doing with this lvl 10 Dwarf in the Dwarf Mines.
Find monsters with good drops and good experience who offer you things to hide behind as you attack them.
If you’re a member, scout out your slayer assignment and decide whether Ranger or Mage would work better in this situation or whether you should stick to playing bash-em with your metal armor.
If you’re fighting something that casts magical spells at you, then play Ranger rather than Mage or Fighter. Leathers and dragonhides are more fire-resistant than either of the other two’s armor types.
In closing, I’d like to add that halberds can also be used like a Fighter’s “from a distance”/range weapon, allowing you to wear your highly protective armor while still attacking from afar, hiding behind or beside something your NPC opponent cannot get past. Blue Dragons and Hellhounds are two that come to mind immediately, although these are both member beasts I believe.

Here an update on the accuracy:

In RuneScape Classic

| History of the Formula |
““““““““““““““““““
- In RuneScape Classic

Back in the RSC days, the game used a different combat formula than the one RS2 uses. A couple of smart people started working on finding out the secret. Jagex didn’t release the formula, so they had to guess and make spreadsheets to get an idea of the accuracy. The accuracy would allow them to see how close they were and if changes would be actual improvements. They managed to find the exact formula and in the end (just before RS2 came), nearly every fansite used it.

- In RuneScape 2

When RS2 was released, Jagex told everyone there had been a change in the combat formula. Again, the original combat formula people set out on a quest to find the new formula. Unfortunately, this was a lot harder, firstly, because there was a lot more competition. Well established fansites all wanted to find out the formula on their own. Secondly, the formula itself was complex, as RuneScape 2 introduced a new combat class (Mage).

Shortly after, many people who were involved in finding the new formula gave up due to lack of interest by the community. This included the original group of people who found the RSC formula. This was the time when MaxWaterman stood up and decided to finish that quest of finding the combat formula. He gathered the available investigation data that others had left behind, and he started improving the existing version. He created a thread here on the RuneScape forum to gather data from players. Some intelligent players wanted to help the project, and so, The Combat Formula Crew was born. We kept improving the formula until it reached near-perfect accuracy ratings.

- Today

Today, our formula is used on most well known fansites. It is now displayed in this sticky thread, and recognised as an integral part of RuneScape’s community. We continue to gather data and help players with calculating. The project is as old as RuneScape 2 is.

Step 3

Step 3: Calculate your Final Combat Level
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look at your Melee, Ranger and Mage Class Combat Levels
Pick the one that has the highest value. The one you pick, will also determine your class. So if the Melee Class Combat Level is the highest, you’re a Warrior (Melee).
Add the Class Combat Level you picked, to the Base Combat Level you calculated earlier.
The result is your Combat Level.
In-game, your current combat level is always rounded down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NEW: A history section in post 5 on this page!

Welcome to The Combat Formula thread. This is a recreation of the previous combat formula thread. In this thread, we discuss the formula that calculates one’s combat level, using the levels in the combat skills. This formula is not exact, but it does have a very high accuracy. Our goal is to improve it so that it becomes exact. The formula can help you calculate your combat level, for any combination of combat skills you like.

Step 1: Calculate your Base Combat level.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your Defence level times 100 (call this variable A)
Your Hitpoints level times 100 (call this variable B)
If your Prayer level is odd:
Your (Prayer level - 1) times 50 (call this variable C)
If your Prayer level is even:
Your Prayer level times 50 (call this variable C)
If your Summoning level is odd:
Your (Summoning level - 1) times 50 (call this variable D)
If your Summoning level is even:
Your Summoning level times 50 (call this variable D)
(A + B + C + D) divided by 400, equals your Base Combat level.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2: Calculate your Class Combat Levels
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your Attack level times 130 (call this variable E)
Your Strength level times 130 (call this variable *)
If your Ranged level is odd:
(Your Ranged level times 195) - 65 (call this variable G)
If your Ranged level is even:
Your Ranged level times 195 (call this variable G)
If your Magic level is odd:
(Your Magic level times 195) - 65 (call this variable H)
If your Magic level is even:
Your Magic level times 195 (call this variable H)
(E + F) divided by 400, equals your Melee Class Combat Level
G divided by 400, is your Ranger Class Combat Level
H divided by 400, is your Mage Class Combat Level
