Buying skills on Runescape

Buying skills on Runescape

I see so many people devaluing skills because you can buy them, fletching, cooking, smithing, crafting and many more can all be bought, or can it?

Ok lets look at it, say you need 40k sharks to get to 99 you stick your cash on GEbay for 41K raw sharks, the next day you log in and you have 41k sharks ready to be collected, you pick them up and put them in your bank, woot you have 99 cooking!!, why can you not buy the cape of achievement? the straight forward reason is you CAN NOT buy a skill! you can not buy a skill you can only buy the supplies, you still need to do the hours of work needed to get the cape, you still need to sit in Burthorpe Bank taking inventory of sharks at a time using them with a fire and waiting for them to cook.

When you buy the supplies for a skill you are not cheating in any way all you are doing is changing the order you train your skills, take fletching for example people like to get 99 fletching as their first or second level 99, the easy way is to purchase logs and bow strings fletch and sell or alch the bows, you then have 99 fletching, you then decide you want 99 wood cutting so you chop logs and sell them, had you done woodcutting first you could have saved the price of the logs and made fletching a lot cheaper*, depending on how the market changes you can make or lose a lot of money this way, if when you sell your logs they sell for more than you bought them for when you were fletching you have made a profit, likewise if you can only sell them for less than you bought them for when fletching you have made a loss.

Another thing to take into consideration when accusing someone of buying skills, it takes money to buy supplies, you need to do something to get the money, getting the money to buy the supplies takes time and work, the difference being you can choose a way you enjoy to get that cash.

*There is an illusion in Runescape that if you collect all your supplies for fletching you can make a profit, unfortunately this is not true, you can only minimise your outlay or reduce your loses:-

Yew log 410gp,
bow string 170 gp,
nat 260gp,
total cost 840gp,

You can sell yew longbows for 580gp, if you can sell your bows you can break even, if you alch them you get 768gp, that’s a loss of 72gp per bow, if you got all the supplies yourself then you have made a profit, Yes? nope, if you sold the supplies you would have made 840gp for 1 of each component, by putting them together you would have made 768gp a loss of 72gp, you can not make a profit fletching but you can get cheap xp, for a loss of 72gp you can get fletching xp and mage xp and you don’t need to wait for your supplies to sell.

I think I will stick to catching sharks on Runescape.
