Runescape Skill Guides WoodCutting

Woodcutting is a skill that can help you in the fields of Fletching and Firemaking, as well as being very profitable.

Woodcutting Tools

Woodcutting is done by chopping a variety of trees and other growth, mostly with axes. However, there is some other growth that you can use a machete with. Information on axes and machetes is listed below.

Axes

There are currently 8 different axes in the game, each with its own chopping standard.

Image Name Level Description
Bronze 1 Ideal for beginners
Iron 1 A step-up from the Bronze, this is somewhat better at cutting trees
Steel 6 Much better than Bronze and Iron, this is generally used at the earliest chance
Black 6 A so-called “rare”, these are obtained from Black Demons and Level-1 Clues
Mithril 21 Better than the Black Axe at almost half the price. Good for players that can’t exactly afford Adamant
Adamant 31 The second best axe in the game
Rune 41 One of the best axes you can get. Hardcore woodcutters wouldn’t be caught dead without one!
Dragon 61 This axe is not only the best axe, but it looks much better and also comes with a special attack. However, it is much more expensive.

Machetes

Most jungle growth in Runescape must be cut with a machete. They do not require woodcutting levels to use. However, the three jungle plants they cut – light jungle, medium jungle and thick jungle – do require varying levels to cut. These jungle plants are listed in the tree section.

Image Machete How To Obtain
Machete Bought in Karamja Jungle General Stores
Opal Machete Buy from Gabooty for trading sticks or bring an Opal, a machete, and some trading sticks to the Safta Doctor
Jade Machete Buy from Gabooty for trading sticks or bring a Jade, a machete, and some trading sticks to the Safta Doctor
Red Topaz Machete Buy from Gabooty for trading sticks or bring a Red Topaz, a machete, and some trading sticks to the Safta Doctor

Trees

There is also a wide selection of trees in Runescape. Free players can cut down all trees excluding the Achey, Jungle, Teak, Maple, Hollow, Mahogany and Magic varieties.

Tree Image Logs Level Exp Information
Normal 1 25 Commonly used for beginners. The only kind of logs that can be made into arrow shafts for Fletching
Achey 1 25 Found east of the Feldip Hills. The only kind of logs that can be used to make Ogre Arrows, Brutal Arrows and the Ogre Comp Bow
Light Jungle* 10 32 Found in the village of Tai Bwo Wannai *Only able to cut with Machete
Oak 15 37.5 A grand old oak. This tree can be used for firemaking experience and some decent woodcutting experience, as well
Medium Jungle* 20 55 Found in the village of Tai Bwo Wannai *Only able to cut with Machete
Willow 30 67.5 The most common freeplay/member tree of choice. Willows are used heavily in fletching and firemaking, due to the fact that they are easily obtained and sold, as there are always buyers to buy such. The experience ratio for these trees is good for how long it takes, a few can be found near banks (Seers’ and Draynor Village)
Dense Jungle* 35 80 Found in the village of Tai Bwo Wannai *Only able to cut with Machete
Teak 35 85 Tai Bwo Wannai: Must do favours for village and pay 100 trading sticks, speak to Murcaily for details(Jungle Potion Quest Required)Also found on the island of Ape Atoll, south of Castle Wars and outside the Cave Horror Den on Mos Le’Harmless
Maple 45 100 A good tree, plentiful in the Seers’ and Sinclair Mansion area. The Island of Miscellania even has a Maple forest; however it is only obtained through completion of the Throne of Miscellania Quest
Hollow 45 87.5 At the same level you can chop Maple trees, you can do the same with Hollow Trees. However, this tree is only found west of Canfis, in Morytania. These cannot be used for fletching/firemaking, but are used to make Splitbark Armor, the protective armor for magicians
Mahogany 50 125 Tai Bwo Wannai: Must do favours for village and pay 100 trading sticks, speak to Murcaily for details(Jungle Potion Quest Required) Also found on the island of Ape Atoll and outside the Cave Horror Den on Mos Le’Harmless
Yew 60 175 One of the better trees to cut down. Unfortunately for players, not many can be found together or near a bank, even though there are some exceptions to the rule. A few can be found in Edgeville near a bank, in Rimmington, Gnome Stronghold, Seers’/Camelot territory, south of the Flax/Beehives, and the forest in Isafdar, Tirannwn
Magic 75 250 The rarest and most profitable tree of all. These trees can take a long time to chop at 75 or above, but still is worth it. These offer the highest amount of experience and cash at the same time. Used with Fletching, in making bows. Not many can be found, but they do occasionally come together: Thormac’s tower, Gnome Stronghold, and the forest in Isafdar, Tirannwn

Normal Trees also appear in two more varieties, Dead Trees and Evergreen Trees. These trees give the same experience as Normal Trees and require the same level to cut.

Extra Woodcutting Aspects

There are also some other aspects of Woodcutting that is important to know.

Nests

These drop randomly on the ground while woodcutting(similiar to gems are found randomly in rocks except nests fall on the floor, not in your inventory). Nests also disappear after a few minutes, so keep an eye out. The nests will contain Tree Seeds (including Fruit Tree), Bird Eggs (Blue, Green Red)*, or Ring Jewelry (Sapphire, Emerald, or Ruby). Once you have taken the item out of the nest, use a Pestle and Mortar on your Bird’s Nest which will crush it. This Crushed Nest is used as a secondary ingredient for the Saradomin Brew Potion. It requires 81 Herblore to make, but if you do not have the level, hold on to the nest.

*Note: There is no current use for the colored eggs, but rumor is that it will be a release of a new pet, so it is recommended to keep them for now.

Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-Up

The Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-Up Mini-Game, located in the Tai Bwo Wannai Village, is a somewhat fun way to level up your Woodcutting. In this Mini-Game, you use machetes to remove the light, medium and dense jungle and earn Trading Sticks, which can be used to buy various things in the area. See the guide for more info.

Canoes

Canoes are a means of transportation if you want to travel quickly to an area along the River Lum, or are not able to afford any other means of transportation. This skill requires woodcutting as a means to provide you with a faster transport, without cost.

Firstly, you need any axe. To make a canoe, you need to chop down the “canoe tree” at any station where canoes are able to be chopped (Keep in mind these stations are all along the river): Lumbridge, Champion’s Guild, Barbarian Village, and Edgeville. Chop down the tree at the station and choose your design. After you are finished, you may sail to each of the following areas just listed as well as the Wilderness (level-35) but when you travel to the wilderness, you can not travel back.

Canoe Name Level Exp Durability (before submerging)
Log 12 30 One Station
Dugout 27 60 Two Stations
Stable Dugout 42 90 Three Stations
Waka 57 150 All Stations

Woodcutting Tips

The following is a list of level-by-level training strategies.

Woodcutting Levels 1-15:

Cut Dead Trees near Draynor Village or , cut the Evergreen Trees in the Taverley.

Woodcutting Levels 15-30:

Level quickly on Oak Trees, banking your logs is optional if you want the Fletching experience as well. Oaks are populated throughout RuneScape, but the best places to find them are Draynor Village, or if you are a member, outside the Castle Wars Arena.

Woodcutting Levels 30-45:

Start chopping Willow Trees, and use the logs to raise your Fletching and/or Firemaking levels, or to sell. Draynor Village is an ideal spot for cutting Willow Trees. Another area to chop Willow Trees is located northwest of the Seers Village Bank.

Woodcutting Levels 45-60:

Stay at Draynor Village, although you can chop Maple Trees, Willow Trees remain a faster source of experience.

Woodcutting Levels 60-75:

Either stay at Draynor Village for faster but less profitable experience, or chop down Maples for more cash in Seers Village and the surrounding areas being good spots, especially directly north of the bank.

Woodcutting Levels 75-99:

Either continue with your Willow/Maple paths, or decide to cut Magic Trees. Although this path is slow, it is the most profitable. If you are a member and are interested in levelling your farming levels, stay with chopping Willow Trees. Willow Trees have a higher drop rate of Nests, which means good farming experience while you chop.*

*Note: If bank space is a problem that you have, you do not have to remove the seed from the nest, just bank the nests with the unknown seed inside and they will stack up, not taking all of your bank space. When you are done, just take them all out and pull the seeds out.

Extra Woodcutting Info

There are some other, extra things that you should know about while raising woodcutting:

Cape of Accomplishment

The ultimate reward for getting level 99 Woodcutting is not only the great ability you will have in the skill, but the Cape of Accomplishment that you will have the oppurtunity to purchase. For more information on Capes of Accomplishment, see the Skill Capes page.
