Following on from my recent dev blog about our ideas for RuneScape Classic, we are delighted to offer everyone the opportunity to try Classic for themselves! For two weeks starting from today, Classic is open for new sign-ups from RuneScape members only.
If you access Classic during this two-week period (using your normal username and password), you will continue to be able to do so after the two weeks are over. If, however, you do not, you will miss out on the chance to do so, so give it a try.
There are 15 members’ worlds, one of which will be left as being only accessible to those veteran Classic players who have stuck with it all the way through.
You can access RuneScape Classic here.
RuneScape Classic is the predecessor to the current RuneScape game. It was closed to new members over four years ago, but we want for players to be able to try out this important part of our history. We also have potential further plans for Classic (as discussed in this blog), so another reason for this re-opening is to see how many people are interested.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this, please visit this forum thread.

Champions’ Challenge Update and Hairstyles
A new challenge awaits worthy adventurers at the Champions’ Guild! It doesn’t matter if you have never seen a champion scroll in your life or have defeated all of them already, there will be something for you. The leprechaun champion is taking on all-comers – there’s no need to find a challenge scroll to fight this little pugilist. Just head on over to the Champions’ Guild and prepare yourself for some ‘no items’ fisticuffs.
Also, three new races have just joined the guild. If you prove yourself to be their enemy, one of them might just drop a scroll challenging you to a duel with their champion, so keep an eye out when battling monsters! Meanwhile, Glophren, the gnome champion of champions, is waiting for the worthiest of adventurers so he can finally issue his challenge. Will you be one of them?
What with the days getting shorter and colder, we thought we’d brighten things up with some new hairstyles! The much requested ‘mullet’ haircut is now available, as well as a few variants on existing styles. The full list is as follows…
Male hairstyles: Dragon variant, Mohawk shaved, Mullet.
Female hairstyles: Asymmetric fringe, Half-up/half-down, Headband, Page boy.

Two worlds have been designated ‘Skill Total’ worlds – that’s world 113 (free) and 114 (members). Only players who have a total level of at least 1,000 will be able to log into these worlds. If this proves to be popular, we can always add more worlds.
We’ve created a handful of item packs for some shops, similar to the box of spirit shards. In certain shops, you can now buy the whole stock of eyes of newt, empty or water-filled vials, raw bird meat, and empty baskets or sacks in one go.
A click-delay issue has been fixed in Castle Wars. The game engine has been modified to adjust the behaviour of these clicks back to their previous speed.
An animation has been added for when players are viewing the world map. Other players will see them in-game looking at a map.
A large number of items with parentheses after their names have had spaces added for consistency and easier searching on the Grand Exchange (e.g. “Agility potion(4)” is now “Agility potion (4)”).
An altar has been added to an upper floor in Falador Castle for players to recharge their Prayer points at.
We’ve added a confirmation when casting High Alchemy on items with a Grand Exchange value of 500,000gp or higher. This should prevent the accidental alching of those expensive items.
We’ve also converted the Superheat, Lvl-x Enchant and Plank Make spells to work in a similar fashion to High and Low Level Alchemy spells (i.e. you can now queue up your next cast).
Slayer Masters have now been given a right-click ‘Get-task’ option to speed things up a bit. You can also find out how many more kills you need with a right-click option on enchanted gems, which will even work if you are currently in combat. Finally, gargoyles have a new ‘Smash’ option when they’re near death to allow you to more easily finish them off with a rock hammer.
Drop tables for the TzHaar have been significantly reworked and now drop more TokKul than before. This is to make up for the changes in the TzHaar shop prices earlier this year. The TokKul awarded for defeating TzTok-Jad in the Fight Caves has also been doubled.
The fairy ring network has been given an auto-dial feature. You’ll still need to discover each fairy ring destination to put in your log, but once there they can be simply clicked on to input the code for you.
Yanille has had more points of entry added to it in the form of a new ladder and doorway.
This week’s patch notes are also more extensive than usual. To read the complete list, check out this forum thread.
The Fishing Trawler minigame is found in Port Khazard. There are many ways to get to this location, here are the most common:
1. Watchtower Teleport – requires Watchtower Quest completed in order to use this method.
Teleport to the Watchtower with 2 Earth Runes and 2 Law Runes and follow the red line to walk to Port Khazard.
2. Spirit Tree – requires Tree Gnome Village completed to use this method.
Use any Spirit Tree on RuneScape and teleport to the Battlefield. Afterwards, walk to Port Khazard by following the blue line.
3. Ardougne Teleport – requires Plague City completed to use this method.
Teleport to Ardougne with 2 Water Runes and 2 Law Runes, then follow the pink line to Port Khazard.
4. Fairy Ring DJP – requires Fairy Tale Part II started to use this method.
Use the Fairy Ring Code “DJP” to teleport just north of Port Khazard, and then walk there by following the yellow line. You need a Dramen staff or a Lunar staff to use the fairy rings.
5. Khazard Teleport – requires Lunar Diplomacy completed to use this method.
Teleport yourself or a group to Port Khazard using the Khazard (Group) Teleport. This teleport will use 2 Astral Runes, 2 Law Runes and 4 or 8 Water Runes and is in the Lunar Spellbook. Follow the green path.
6. Charter Ship
Charter a ship from a place on RuneScape and pay a small fee to be taken to Port Khazard. After, take a small walk to the minigame by following the orange line.
Okay, first things first, whatever you’re going to train on, make sure it has low attack and defense. I say this because it is a common mistake to train on zombies and guards, both of which can hit often and depending on your defense, relatively high. So, taking all this into consideration, you will want something that has low defense, attack and strength, but high hitpoints.
Members, for you this is extremely easy. Chickens, goblins and low level spiders in the lumbridge area until you get to 15, after that, go to Fremmenik, and kill rock crabs. Eventually the crabs will stop attacking you, when this happens, go into the cave (just a bit east, if you start going up the mountain, you’ve gone too far) and come right back out and you will find that they attack again. If you took the route through Fremmenik itself, just go south until you reach the market square.
Best Items to Lend »Free Players, for you (well, as of last friday us X’( ) I had to do some research myself. So in my research, I found some problems, namely that there is no creature that fits that description, so for you (us) I suggest the same thing as members, until you get to 15, after that, alas, it gets difficult, this will take MUCH longer than members but is worth it if you want a higher level player, it makes pking a lot easier. So, after level 15, start chopping logs, get your woodcutting skill up to 60, start cutting yews, make at least 150,000 gold, (if you already have tons of gold disregard that last part) and buy lots of food, I use swordfish, and go to the barbarian village. Once you are there, go down the opening in the center of the village. Welcome to the Stronghold of Security, start training all of your skills until they are all at 40. Go back to the Grand Exchange. Purchase a rune halberd if you are melee, more runes if you mage and more arrows and a better bow if you prefer ranging. Once you have your equipment, go south to the wizards tower. (there will be no need for food) Once you are at the tower, go to the top level. Attack the lesser demon, it will take time, but you will eventually get there.
Now for one of the easiest parts of your strength pure training….. Picking skill goals. Now this is that part where i must say easier done then said…. Now with that said lets start off by picking skill goals to train. As a rule i must say strength must have a minimum level of 50 to pk and become a respected pker. Now your attack can range from 1-40 although i suggest getting it up a little so you can hit a few extra times each fight.
Alright now that you are on real runescape soil you can head over to the dungeon very close to where you land after your lumbrige teleport and get the two 250xp skill lamps from sir Vance and use then both on hp. Yes that’s right all other guides say to use those lamps on skills and I would to but I found out that by using those lamps plus the ones from the stronghold of player safety you get 15 hp or 1250xp in hp without doing any combat and that will give you the best bonus in the game as hp is the pures best friend. Now after that head over to varrock and take the grand exchange tutorial and then buy a few trout maybe 12 or so because you don’t take that much damage in the stronghold of security. Then after you are done the stronghold of security you should do the stronghold of player safety and remember that you use the xp lamps on hp. After that you should have the 20k from the strongholds plus however much you get from the items off the tutorial island. Now you can go a head and buy 1 set full iron all scimitars up to mithril and use the rest of your money to buy cakes to use for training. If you want to know why you don’t buy a rune scimitar its because rune scimitars currently go for 30-40k or more.

2nd September 2009 – RuneTek 5 Game Engine
This week sees the release of a massive upgrade to several elements of the RuneScape game engine. These include the RuneTek 5 graphics upgrade described in last week’s developer blog as well as key parts of the game server and RuneScript systems.
The graphics engine update brings with it a complete revamp of the Standard Detail option, bringing resizable window (for everyone) and fullscreen (members only) modes, as well as optional new features that include:
Distance fogging and sky colour.
Ground blending and path smoothing.
Underwater visibility.
We’ve also improved High Detail mode with shadowing across all world levels (if your computer can support it) and an improved minimap in both versions. You’ll also be pleased to know this upgrade has allowed us to fix several long-standing bugs, including:
Mis-clicking in heavy load areas (such as the Grand Exchange) causing unwanted actions.
Progress bars on Grand Exchange interfaces not working on several graphics cards.
Less visibly, we’ve also taken the time to heavily update parts of the server action and scripting systems. This follows on from work we did earlier in the year which Andrew described in this blog. The aim behind this batch of changes was to try to make the timing of actions more consistent across the game, which will help to make future content bugs less likely. We have done weeks of additional testing on these server updates, however, they are quite extensive and incredibly wide-ranging, so if any bugs have managed to slip through the net, we encourage you to submit a bug report.
All told, we have written or re-written around 50,000 lines of the game engine over the last few months to really improve these key areas and allow us to create a whole new set of exciting upgrades over the coming months and years.
This update to the game engine has allowed us to pull both the SD and HD versions of the game into the same applet. As such, we have updated the home page of the website so there is now only one ‘Click here to play’ button. If you wish to switch between using free or member worlds, this can be done using the ‘World Select’ feature, which can be found on the game applet’s main menu.
Whether you see an advert above the login screen or not is dependent on whether the last world that you logged in was a free or a members’ world.

One thing the new engine has allowed us to do is create context-sensitive cursors. If you choose to turn this option on in the Game Options menu, your mouse cursor will display a small icon of the default interaction with any object, location or NPC – e.g. “Open Door” will change your mouse cursor to an icon of a door opening. These cursors have not been added for every default interaction just yet, but we will be looking to expand upon them in future.
The Special Attack bar in the combat interface now also displays the amount of special attack energy you have remaining as a percentage.
We’ve made some changes to the World Select page. Firstly, you’ll notice we’ve removed some of the information to clean it up a bit. The Quick Chat and PvP columns have moved into the more general ‘Activity/Location’ column. This column will now only specify a flag and country if the world doesn’t have a theme, and we’ve created a RuneScape flag to go with the latter. On the right-hand side you’ll notice a ‘Ping’ column. This displays the response time between you and the servers – lower is better, so this should help you find a lag-free world near you. Note that some of your preferences may have changed if you were previously sorting by some of the removed columns. Simply select your new preferred choice(s) and it will store those for next time.
Mobilising Armies themed worlds now come in two varieties: worlds where games require four players for a game to start, and worlds where games require 20 players to start. Visit the Themed Worlds page to see how many players are required to start a game on each world.

2nd September 2009 – Changes to Autocasting Spells
We have redesigned the way autocasting combat spells works so that it no longer requires a magic staff. Now, you can set a spell to autocast via the redesigned Magic Spellbook interface. This change is designed to make autocasting spells easier and more intuitive.
A summary of the changes is as follows:
Autocasting no longer requires a magic staff.
Autocasting is now controlled via your spellbook. To set a spell to autocast, simply select the “Autocast” option from the spell icon in your spellbook.
You can still single-cast spells by selecting the “Cast” option from the spell icon in the spellbook.
In the standard spellbook, “Autocast” is now the default option (left-click) for combat spells, with “Cast” as the alternate option (right-click).
In the Ancient Magicks spellbook, “Cast” remains the default option (left-click), with “Autocast” as the alternate option (right-click).
As with before, there are no spells in the Lunar spellbook that can be set to autocast.
You can still choose whether to receive Defence XP or not when autocasting spells via the new toggle button in the bottom-left corner of your spellbook.
You can now also receive Defence XP for single-casting spells that deal damage, if you have this option toggled on.
Four buttons have been added to the bottom of the Magic Spellbook interface that allow you to filter what spell icons are visible. Click on these buttons to toggle the visibility of combat, teleport, skill-based and miscellaneous spells.
As staves are no longer required for autocasting, we have granted some of the more special ones the ability to cause 10% more magic damage. The following staves receive this bonus:
Ahrim’s staff
Master wand
Void Knight mace
Zuriel’s staff
Corrupt Zuriel’s staff
Ancient staff
Finally, it is also now possible to autocast these spells:
Saradomin Strike
Flames of Zamorak
Iban Blast
Claws of Guthix

Speak to the Odd Old Man, who can be found east of Varrock and west of Canifis. He needs a collection of bones, and asks you for assistance. The eight bones he requires are a giant rat bone, a ram skull, a goblin skull, a big frog leg, a unicorn bone, bear ribs, a monkey paw, and a giant bat wing. It is important to note that the bones that you need to collect are not normal bone drops and can only be obtained while in the process of completing this quest.
