It’s pretty hard to imagine the first days of RuneScape. For a start, there were no monsters, no Zamorak and no god wars, which would imply that RuneScape was a breeze. Surely you could just wake up, have a cup of tea with Guthix and settle down for some farming. Easy peasy, right?

Erm, no. The first quest of this month, Meeting History, will reveal the struggles that the first settlers faced on RuneScape. This sequel to Making History will encourage you to get more hands-on in your research of the past, giving you insights into the world’s quiet beginnings and its harsh realities. It will even divulge the beginnings of magic and strange objects called ‘runes’.

Man’s knowledge of magic and runes has come on leaps and bounds from the time of Meeting History. Just take a peek at the next release: the Runecrafting Guild!

In the guild, wizards will be bent over books, trying desperately to unlock the secrets of Runecrafting. How is a rune made? Why are yellow and green orbs released when the reaction occurs? For Runecrafting scholars, these questions pale in comparison with the following: which is more significant - green orbs or yellow orbs? For years arguments have raged on, and two wizards will be creating something that’ll end the debate once and for all: the Great Orb Project!

The Great Orb Project will be a fun minigame for two opposing teams who have been given one simple task: collect more orbs than the other team. Only problem is, your opponents will do all they can to stop you winning - including pushing your orbs away before you can get to them! This fast-paced and manic minigame will offer you a great alternative for training your Runecrafting, with minimal fuss, tutorials or complex rules.

Not content with updating one skill this month, we’ve decided to reignite Firemaking too. In Varrock, King Roald has become increasingly wary of the evil eyes casting greedy looks at his city, so he’ll be taking precautions: fourteen warning beacons, running from the River Salve to the western end of the Wilderness. The problem is, no one will be available to test them out, so - surprise, surprise - you’ll become the most suitable candidate.

So begins All Fired Up, a sizzling new quest that acts as a simple and very short tutorial for beacon lighting. What can you do with large cauldrons full of sticks, you may ask? Well, your task, if you should choose to accept it, will be to light as many as possible at one time, offering you an entertaining and alternative method for training your Firemaking - oh, and the rewards will make you the toast of firemakers everywhere…

I’ve been playing runescape for over two years now. I’ve discovered some ways of getting easy cash when you just want that new pair of boots, or that new item every ones talking about, or if you’re dedicated enough, even a party hat.

Tip 1#: This tip goes for the lvls 5 - 20; Kill Cows and take their cow hides. If you’re a free member, the cow pen will be filled with newbs, or even a wizard or two along with a ranger. If you’re a member, the cow pen will be less occupied with users. Which gives free space for you to kill instead of waiting for a cow to spawn. But for both users, GO TO THE LESS POPULATED WORLD YOU SEE. These worlds have a better chance of getting a free pen to yourself. Sell the hides for atleast 100gp each, but try to sell them for 140gp each, who knows. You might get more then you bargained for.

Tip #2: For people fishing lvls between 40 - 60; You can fish lobsters and swordfish. People buy raw lobsters for cooking experience, and cooked ones for food appearently. People buy raw lobsters for 150 - 175 gp each, and cooked for 200 - 250 gp each. But with sword fish is a different story. Each raw swordfish is around 300gp - 350 each While the cooked ones are at a wopping 400 gp each. Be careful for water trolls as they are tough. Also, I’ve seen them cause death before so I suggest using prayer against them.

Tip #3: For People Woodcut level above 30 - 99; Willows sell for 40 each since people fletch at the member world, if you’re lvl 30 wood cut ( WC ) cutting willows will be tough, but after a while you’ll get used to it. People above 65 wood cut can cut yews that sell for 230 gp each. If you’re lvl 75 wc or above like me, you can cut mage logs, but these are only found in members servers, and they sell for 1,000 gp each. Yes, 1,000 gp each. But these take a horrid ammount of time to cut. I’m just 77 wc now and I’m having a hard time cutting these logs.

Tip #4: For people with Crafting above 43 and magic above 60; People with these requirements can make…RING OF LIVES. Ring of lives are members only items and can only be enchanted if you’re a member in a members server. Step 1: Have atleast 1 cut diamond. Step 2: Buy a ring mould (I prefer Al-Kharid since you can mind gold at the mine and buy moulds at the shop). Step 3: Mine gold (Note: you must have the appropriate mining lvl to mine gold). Step 3(continued): You don’t need to mine the gold, you can buy them off a player for about 180 gp each. Step 4: Make a gold bar by using gold ore with a furnace. Step 5: Use the bar with the furnace to make a diamond ring (Note: You must have a cut diamond along with the mould to make the ring). Step 6: Enchant the Diamond Ring to make…THE RING OF LIFE. You need about 10 fire runes and 1 cosmic I think. Ring of lives sell for 10k each. Don’t let anyone else say anything different. They save you if you have below 10 HP and teleport you to either Lumbridge, Varrock, or White Knights Castle.

Tip #5: In order for this to work, you need to be a member and have a reasonable ammount of wc lvl, and cash.; This tip can really get you good profit. Step 1: Cut Normal Logs, or Oak Logs. Step 2: Go to the Saw Mill NPC at varrock, he is near the lumberyard. He cuts every normal log for 100gp each and 250gp each for oak. Then buy bolts of cloths, sure they are 650gp each, but well worth the cost. Then buy NAILS LIKE CRAZY. Then go to Remmington World 6 or 2, and say ” SELLING PLANKS, 500GP EACH, or, SELLING OAK PLANKS, 750GP EACH. Then say SELLING BOLTS OF CLOTH, 3K EACH! Last but not least say SELLING NAILS (Bronze sell for 5gp each, Iron for 10gp each, and Steel for even 30gp each) At the end, you’ll find a reasonable ammount of money in your pocket. Trust me, this works. I buy materials, and I already lost 200k which means someone has 200k in their pocket right now by doing this, so don’t give up merchandising.

Hope you enjoyed my tips, and enjoy…being rich!

Obviously there are many ways to make money in RuneScape. Some of the methods i post may not be what you like to do, and some may be just right. Give a few a try!

Mining/Smithing
Mining is a good income for money, and experience. You can either just mine and sell the ores, or smith the ores and then use other money making skills (like Alching and High Alching) and apply them to this skill.

Once you can smith Mith it becomes very handy money making skill. Mith peices can sell anywhere from 1k-6k and can be quick profit to those in need.

If you are only going to mine and sell ores, it is recomened you sell coal (30 Mining) until you can mine mith (55 Mining, but recomended 60+ mining for time use.) Mith ores can sell for about 500-1k a peice, which is good money to desperate smithers. Addy ores (75 Mining) are an even better way to earn money, going from 2k-8k a peice its quick money. Rune ores (85 mining) are the true gold mine in mining though; Going anywhere from 5k-20k a peice! Think about that, 28 rune per trip and 10k per ore; Thats 280k a trip!

Woodcutting
In RuneScape woodcutting has become a market of its own. Desperate fletchers and high alchers by laws for insane prices just so they can make some money or move up 15 spots in the highscores. A quick and easy way to make money.

Herblore (Members)
No matter your herblore you can always make decent money off of herbs. Anybody with 1 herblore can sell each unidentified herb for 500 each. Once you can identify the herb “Rannar” it goes for 1k-2k each per unidentified herb above rannar. And finally, once you can identify the herb Avantoe and below; unidentified herbs (above avantoe) go for a whopping 2k-3k each! This is a quick side way for members to make some extra cash.

Fletching (Members)
The all useless fletching skill, unless of course you have 55 magic and can high alchemy items. A quick, free, painless (other than time consuming) way to make money. Members simply cut a wood, make a bow, add string and high alchemy it!

Alching
**It is recomended that you use high alchemy (magic level 55) to turn items into money, unless it’s an item that means nothing to you.**

Simply take an item, a fire staff and alot of nature runes and high alchemy an item for money. This is a great combination skill with woodcutting and fletching. It includes experience for the following skills:
*Theiving (To theive the nature runes (members))
*Woodcuting (When you cut the wood to make the bow)
*Crafting (when making the bow string from flax (Members))
*Fletching (when making the logs into bows (members))
*Magic (when high alching the item)

This is my preferred way of making money, but everyone has their prefences.

Note, I really do enjoy some of the feedback I get in this blog. I’ve heard some great stories and received some great tips and tricks that have helped my own playing and enjoyment of the game.

But, unfortunately, my blog also attracts folks of all ages who see me as competition to be battered down into the ground (”I’m better than you, see?” comments), or some kind of financial supplier with a never-ending source of free stuff.

On the one hand, the relentless begging and bashing are strange concepts to me, considering I’m a complete and utter stranger, but on the other hand they’re not strange concepts to me because I notice clearly in life how many humans mistakenly think the world revolves around them and that everyone around them is ultimately present to either serve them or stand in their way.

I used to just delete the comments, but I think I’ll start to post about them instead, because it sounds more fun, and lets me link to other articles in my blog that new readers might not have otherwise come across.

I’ll be nice, because that’s what I am - but I also need practice being blunt, so I will likely do that too.

So, we’ll start with the first one I looked at out of the 909 comments I need to sift through since I haven’t been moderating comments for the past 9 months or so:

QUESTION/COMMENT
Date: November 18, 2006

dude how did u get ur stats so high?! I wuz wonderin if u could give me some money like 500k or sometin.

my user is [no longer included here]

add me and try and give memoney!!!!

ANSWER:

I got my stats high by playing hour upon hour upon hour, wasting time I could have spent socializing with humans face-to-face, working out, cooking healthy meals, or even learning new things and expanding my various Real Life potentials. I also got my stats high by sticking with the same character and rarely playing alternate ones. For example, I have no “pure” PK-based characters at this time.

To optimize my advancement, I tended to log in early in the morning when the population counts were the lowest and work on my high-competition skills like mining during those times.

Becoming a member was a key in my advancement. The world is much much bigger and therefore things you’re trying to gather in any one spot tend to have less competition than in non-member worlds.

As for cash - no, I won’t give you any. You’re a complete stranger, take responsibility, learn how to earn it on your own and stop relying on the world to support you.

There’s lots of great tips in this blog in general, but check out the specific entries about earning money by selling logs, running runes, mining ores, and if you’re a member, running flax.

If you need a job, check out the Runescape Job board and list your profile for free today.

Runescape is a very popular online game, and as a result, you may find yourself competing with others both in your battling areas and while you gather raw materials like logs and ores.

Simple strategies to lessen the frustration you’ll feel from this competition are as follows:

Become a Member if at all possible - the accessable part of the world is larger and thus there are places to gather your raw materials and build your skills.
Find a bank far away from the main cities and gather your materials from that location instead. Many players are too lazy to leave the main cities, so the competition is inherently reduced.
Find a time of the day when there are reliably less people playing, and spend that time gathering materials that are the most frustrating with other players around: mining, log gathering and fishing for example.
Invest the time in improving your ranging ability (bow and arrow use), because when you’re fighting in competitive areas, quick-clicking rangers have an advantage, and in some areas a ranger can stand out of the reach of a large monster, yet still attack and kill that monster.
Make your own arrows - this goes with the above point - if you try to buy enough arrows to improve your ranging ability, you’ll spend all of your money and still not have enough arrows. It’s better to advance your mining, smelting and fletching skills so you can create and use your own arrows. Plus, hey, if you have an extra 1000 laying around after all that work, you can sell it for a profit to others who are too lazy to create their own!
Explore the wilderness when the game server isn’t full - there are a lot of great skilling places, like mines and herblore-component things, in the Wilderness. But of course, there are inherent dangers in the Wilderness - other players looking to kill you for sport or for your equipment. Explore when the game server is quiet and you’ll be a lot less stressed.
Save every rune you come across - then build your mage skills periodically. Building your mage skills is rewarded by the teleport skills you will get at mid-to-high levels, which make transportation around the world a LOT EASIER, and provides for quick-escape within certain parts of the Wilderness in case you find yourself under attack.
Sell law runes 1, 2 or 5 at a time when players are specifically desperate for the runes - don’t sell large quantities at any one time as you won’t get a good rate for them, and law runes are valuable (being a key part of the mage teleports above). If you sell 1, 2 or 5 at a time, you can ask 1000 coins for each and players will pay. Watch for their advertisements in the bank.

Short version of this post:

No, I will not give you anything for free, and I will not loan you any money. People like me, however, offer jobs to those who don’t mind doing work to get the money or equipment they desire. So, venture over to the Runescape Jobs and Pals board and list your info, or find a buyer there, and YES feel free to ask me for Runescape tips, but NO, DON’T ASK FOR ANY MONEY OR GAME “STUFF” FOR FREE.

In fact, don’t even tell me how broke you are, or how poor you are. I don’t want to hear about it, you’re in the same boat as 95% of the Runescape population. The other 5% have found some way to feel joy from doing the things that gain big money over time.

Long version of this post:

Free online role playing games are a lot of fun, specifically because there are SO many people to meet and talk to (or attack and kill), as well as so many things to do on the game, and so many places to go…

But they’re also annoying sometimes, because with free online games come a whole bunch of people who can’t afford the registered/members version of the game, and it seems that among these players there are a higher percentage of folks who display Annoying Behavior, and who seemingly don’t realize it’s annoying.

This entry is dedicated to the education of all individuals as to what denotes Annoying Behavior on an Online Role Playing Game.

Mainly it’s this:

BEGGING.

Begging is when you ask for something for free from someone you barely know.

If you’ve spent a few weeks chatting and exchanging Runescape tips and getting to know someone, you might have built up enough good will in the relationship to borrow something, and that’s a different story.

I’m talking about the folks who talk to me for 10 minutes or less and are then asking me “is there anything you have that you don’t want that you could give to me?”, “I got hacked/I died, can I have some money/equipment?” and “wow you must have a lot of money, could I borrow 50k?” or the likes. I’ve even been asked by people if I’d pay REAL money for them to become members!!!

You think there’s no big deal in asking the for a few in-game items for free, but know this: the person you’re asking (ie: me) has probably been asked that question by 10 different people already today, and 10 people yesterday and 10 people the day before…

You’re seen as JUST ANOTHER BEGGAR. Beggars are annoying on the game just like they are in Real Life when you’re walking down the street and 5-10 complete or near-complete strangers come up and ask you for change.

Please don’t beg for handouts from me. I’m perfectly willing to give you a “job” cutting wood or mining ores, and I’ll even pay you in cash or equipment (up to and including mith stuff) so you get what you need, but the quickest way to my Ignore list and permanent non-chat status with me is to beg for handouts (ie: anything you didn’t work for).

Begging just is NOT cool.

And in closing, advertising how broke or poor you are isn’t cool either - it’s begging without even having the guts to ask the direct question of “can I have something from you to relieve my broke or poor situation?”

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging, and I apologize to you non-beggars out there for having to read this, although I’m sure you agree wholeheartedly with this post.

Runescape Job Board is now open for business. Buyers and Sellers wanted!

I sincerely appreciate the questions, comments and tips other folks leave me through this blog, and while I’m currently way behind on approving comments for display, I plan to be answering a lot of the good questions that have come through. If your question doesn’t get handled, feel free to leave a comment about what you’re wondering about!

Recent Reader Question:

Submitted November 16/06
“Hey, i have a pure wc’er and hes only lvl 6. =] hes 59 wc but i never seem to be able to sell them. what price should i prefferably sell them :)”

Congrats! That’s a lot of chopping to get to wc59! And you’re so close to being able to chop Yew, which is highly sought-after by members because bows made of Yew ‘high alch’ for great rates!

In a non-member world, wood is probably a lot harder to sell, simply because the ‘fletching’ skill is not available to the players around you.

For those who might not have read about it much, fletching is a members-only skill which allows players to whittle arrow shafts and bows from various types of logs.

My personal experience has been that regular logs sell much better than oak or willow. Maple sells better than regular logs, but their higher price is likely because there are no Maple trees on non-member worlds and thus the whole ’supply and demand’ bit is imbalanced. Yew logs sell for the highest price, but also require the most dedication to be able to cut in the first place.

Note, I’ve been away for a bit so my prices may not be superbly accurate. They should be close, if you can find the right buyer, however:

Regular logs - 50gp per log (when selling to an arrow-maker)
Oak logs - 20gp per log
Willow logs - 30gp per log
Maple logs - 100gp per log
Yew logs - 300gp per log
Magic logs - 1000gp per log

As is standard with most things on the Player Market, transactions are done in bulk. For you, the woodchopper, that means you should be collecting at least 250 logs before advertising to other players in common meeting areas like banks, and if you take the time to collect 1000 logs before selling, you’ll find buyers with real cash who won’t try to trade you junk in return.

The key with making money on the player market as a ‘worker’ is having the patience to understand that the real buyers don’t buy in 100-lot quantities of ore, wood, flax, cow hides, feathers, etc… the real buyers are players who spend serious chunks of money on raw materials so they don’t have to do the collection work themselves but can make use of the materials in boosting other skills or re-stocking equipment such as arrows. They don’t want to meet you every time you have 100 to sell.

Once you’ve found one single buyer for your stock, it’s usually not that difficult to leverage the relationship to find additional buyers, or find additional “jobs” with the first buyer. Players who use the player market to buy raw materials in bulk generally buy many different raw materials from many different players, and have friends who do the same thing as well. If you serve your first client well, you should be able to get some referrals in time, to expand your “business”

Good luck with your woodcutter, I hope Yew brings you much wealth!
